Mistakes to be avoided while framing a Resume
Are you tired of sending your resumes and not hearing anything back? Then it’s time for you to re-vamp your resume because it gives the first impression of professional life to the interviewer. Resumes are the first chance to show your talent, skills and how are you a perfect fit for the organization. So, the first step needs to create the best impression by putting the best foot forward.
There are uncountable students and employees who diminish their chance of getting hired by top companies because of small mistakes in resumes but for every mistake, there is a remedy and solution. Here are some common mistakes, which should be avoided while framing a resume.
1. One Page is Enough
Don’t put everything in the resume, try to frame short sentences and highlight the relevant skills which match your profile. Also, make use of formatting techniques, like bullet or pointers, it will bring the eye of the reader to highlights.
Don’t cut the meat from your resume, write which will help you land an interview. Don’t go long keep it short!
2. Highlights skill-based duties instead of defining tasks
In every resume, employers are looking for the performed duties and roles, not just a task. If you want to ask yourself about skill-based duties then ask a question from yourself that
· How were you better employee than other?
· What were the challenges you faced and how you cope with them?
· Why you stayed in the last organization?
· Why did you receive awards or recognitions?
· Why are you choosing this job?
After getting the answer you will be able to highlight your duties and skills.
For example: Planned and organized weekly meeting/webinar on Microsoft PowerPoint or
Managed various brand shoots, by setting up the stage, studio/audio, lighting set up, and promotional activities.
3. Be specific in words: The Less is More!
Always keep in mind that Resume is a portrayal of yourself, so be real and specific. Put all the unique skills and talent you have relevant to the job profile in short sentences/words.
For E.g : “Spearheaded a new product launch and successfully strategized marketing campaigns to make it India’s No 1 brand within a year” instead of “Executed the launch event , closed venue, vendors, guest list, collaterals and everything for the event. Ensured participation of 100 guests at the event and a successful launch event with celebrity attendees and CEOs of corporate. Also executed activations for the new product in the entire India, acquired a good no of customers data for the new product and so on.”
4. Take care of alignment and spacing errors
In present times, due to lack of time freshers never take care of spacing and alignment errors. These spacing errors can cost a big rejection in career. So, always keep in mind before submitting a resume that there should a proper space between words & lines and the alignment should be the left side. This makes a resume neat and clean which gives an impression of perfection to the interviewer/employee.
5. Incorrect personal details and grammatical errors
Errors in personal details can give an impression of your negligence and irresponsible attitude which in the end may result in rejection. So, always keep in mind to check the resume 3 times to avoid grammatical and minor detail error.
Pro tip: Use an email address which is identical to your name for example Amitsharma@gmail.com and never use: Cuteangle12@gamil.com
6. Avoid fancy font and use readable fonts
Use a font that is readable and is simple because simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Avoid fancy font like Curlz MT or Brush Script MT instead use Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri or Cambria S-12’
7. Don’t go for a designed CV, make it simple yet impressive
Make simple but effective resume, which gathers the attention of the interviewer to read your resume. Use simple templates with light color combinations.
8. Make your weakness your strength
Be smart and intelligent while writing this. Making your weakness a strength will give an impression of a smart attitude.
For eg: Your weakness of “taking time while finishing work” can be positioned as your strength by saying “a critical thinking attitude towards work”
Through this, your weakness is highlighted as a good point.
9. Always edit and proofread
Resumes are the initial step in career paths and if you want to keep moving then you have to take every step carefully. This is the most common error which people forget before submitting their resumes. It is important to proofread your resume and ask a friend or colleague to check if there is any mistake.
If you have faced rejection many times then rectify these above mistakes in your resume and keep applying for your desired job role.
